Experiential Learning at University of Maryland Shore Regional Health
If you are interested in experiential learning at a University of Maryland Shore Regional Health facility, please read the following instructions and definitions. These guidelines have been created by the facility and must be adhered to strictly. The following terms clarify the learning experience:
Definitions
Shadowing: An observational experience (“eyes and ears” only) lasting several hours, not to exceed five days. This is a non-paid experience for individuals aged 16 and older.
Internship: A career exploration experience where students may assist with certain tasks depending on their prior experience or training. However, there is no patient contact. This may be a paid or non-paid experience. Individuals must be 16 years of age or older.
Externship: An observational experience (“eyes and ears” only) lasting more than five days. This is a non-paid experience for individuals aged 16 and older. Students will be required by UM SRH to complete a background check. The UM SRH HR Department will assist you in this process.
Requirements
Each mid-shore county public school system has an affiliation agreement with UM Shore Regional Health. If the student’s school is private, an affiliation agreement must be in place. Check with your school counselor to ensure this is completed. Most home-schooled students have an affiliation with county public schools. If you are home-schooled independently, please contact the UM SRH Human Resource Department.
Next Steps
Students should meet with their school career counselor/coach to discuss their interest in a learning experience and define their area of interest within the healthcare system. The school counselor or career coach should then contact the UM Shore Regional Health Human Resources Department to identify the student’s request for shadowing. A Human Resource team member will reach out to the appropriate SRH department directors/managers to determine if they can accommodate the student(s). Once the placement is confirmed, the student will receive an orientation packet from the SRH HR Department that must be completed before the shadowing experience begins. Human Resources will provide the student with the department leader’s contact information, and the student will be responsible for contacting the leader directly to set up a schedule.
